Other
nations around the world celebrate New Year slightly different. In
England, the center of attention lies in London, where people gather
near the Big Ben to hear it chime in the New Year. The French often
celebrate this holiday with a large feast and fireworks displays.
Germans too enjoy fireworks displays, drinking, and partying on New
Year’s Eve. In Japan the day is often spent cleaning one’s house in
preparation for the arrival of the New Year’s God. Buddhist temples
across Asia also ring their bells 108 times at midnight to welcome the
New Year. In Australia, fireworks also prove to be a major part of the
celebrations, along with gathering in major cities to celebrate. Many
other nations also have their own unique traditions and customs, many
of which involve drinking, fireworks, and of course partying.
Celebrations aren’t the only part of the New Year holiday. In fact, an equally important aspect of the holiday is New Year’s resolutions. Resolutions are promises to yourself to achieve a certain goal within one year. These goals range in topic and difficulty, but they are almost always an advantageous life change. Some common goals include weight loss, getting in shape, earning more money, quit smoking, and other goals which many share to improve themselves. Although each year making a resolution is popular, it also seems that breaking the resolution is just as popular. Of the men and women who make a resolution, only 12% actually achieve their goals.
Across the world, New Year’s Day is celebrated. It is celebrated in a variety of ways, with each nation and culture having their own unique customs.
